The Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009

Karen Jones, BSc (Hons) PhD, Barrister
and Sarah Slade, BSc (Hons) MRICS, CLA National Access Adviser

The extension of public access rights to the coastal strip has a number of unexpected implications for those having rights to or over the land affected. Natural England has a responsibility to balance various interests in working out details of the access schemes but it is not clear how this will impact on matters such as sporting rights, privacy, existing commercial activities, planning and development. There are also uncertainties about the way the right will be applied in some estuaries.
